NEWS DESK: A person was killed after a speedboat and an engine boat collision at Suvalong waterfall on Kaptai Lake on Sunday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Shanti Ranjan Chakma,37 of village Shilardak in Suvalong union under Barkal upazila of the district.

Quoting locals, police said the accident took place when the speedboat of Barkal upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) SM Monjurul Haque pushed a local engine boat adjacent to the Suvalong waterfall on the Kaptai Lake, killing one on the spot.

Shanti Ranjan and Bimoll Chakma were returning from Suvalong Bazar when the UNO was moving from Suvalong waterfall to Barkal upazila headquarters with his speedboat after inspection it. Bimol instantly jumped off on the lake from their boat and save his life. But Shanti Ranjan got injured on arms and head and drawn after fell down on the lake. Later, the divers of Rangamati fire station rescued his dead body.

Officer in-charge of Barkal police station Kazi Jasim Uddin said the dead body was handed over to the family after post mortem.

Contacted, SM Monjurul Haque, UNO of Barkal upazila, said it was an unexpected incident that gave me pain and I so saddened over the accident.

“Instantly, I gave Tk 10 thousand to the local UP chairman for rescuing the dead body and more financial assistance will be provided to the victim’s family for the cremation and funeral,” added UNO. (Copy-paste is strictly prohibited as per copy write act).
